Abstract

The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of scales and seeds of CedrusatlanticaEndl.Carr.wereanalysed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Twenty-one components representing80% of the total scales oil and nineteen components comprising 95.75% of the total seeds oil were identified. The major components in the scales oil were abietadiene (28,3%) followed by abietatriene (19,5%), while the seeds oil had α-pinene (31.19%), β- farnesene (21.06%) and bornyl acetate (19.67%) as the major components.Furthermore, the antimicrobial activities of the essential oils were investigated by the disc diffusion method against Escherichia coli (CIP 54127), Pseudomonas aeroginosa(CIP A 22), Bacillus cereus (IPL 58605), Streptococcus C (IPT 2-035), Enterococcus faecalis (CIP 103214), Klebsiellapneumoniae, (CIP 82905) and Proteus vulgaris (CIP 58605). The results showed that the essential oil of scales of Cedrusatlanticaexhibited a high antimicrobial activity against most tested bacteria.
