Abstract

Aspectrophotometric procedure for the determination of zinc(II) by its quantitative displacementwith copper(II) fromdiethyldithiocarbamate complex, Cu(DDTC)2 is described. Subsequently, Cu(II) complexwas extractedwith CHCl3/CCl4 and the absorbance was measured at 435 nm. The molar absorptivity (å) and SandallÂ’s sensitivity at this wavelength are 2.86 × 105mole-1 Lcm-1 and 3.076 ng cm-2, respectively.Reproducibilitywithin 4%detection limit was 0.029 ìg mL-1 and linear calibration range was 0.2-14 ìg mL-1 with the regression coefficient (r2) 0.998 for zinc determination. In the presence of a suitablemasking agent (ascorbic acid and sodiumthiosulfate) verygoodselectivitywas achieved.Themethod was extended to the determination of zinc in a number of environmentalwater and soil samples, biological, pharmaceutical, fertilizer and food samples.
