Abstract
Protonation of the highly reactive intermediates, produced in the reaction between triphenylphosphine and alkyl acetylenecarboxylates by water leads to vinyltriphenylphophonium salts, which undergo coupling reaction with conjugate base to produce corresponding pentavalent phosphorus intermediates. The pentavalent phosphorus intermediates are unstable and rearrange to stable diphenylphosphine oxide derivatives under reaction conditions.
