Synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity of novel pyrrole derivatives

Abstract

4-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)benzohydrazide (1) undergoes facile condensation with aromatic aldehydes to afford the corresponding N'-arylidene-4-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)benzohydrazide (2a-e) in good yields. Cyclo condensation of compounds (2a-e) with maleic anhydride yields 1-(4-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)benzamido)-5-oxo-2-aryl-2,5- dihydro-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (3a-e). The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of analytical and spectral data. All the newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities.
